Storage Options:The MSU Surplus Store/Storage Services provides a variety of options to meet customer's needs. Storage services has access to four buildings that provide heated, non-heated, or 24/7 self storage on a monthly or yearly basis. Additionally option for exterior movable storage trailers are available. Currently over 100 campus departments use these services options.  .

Current Rates:
(Based on a minimum of 18 square feet (1 bay) of floor space.)

  • Heated: $7.56 a bay per month, $90.72 a bay per year
  • Non-heated: $6.12 a bay per month, $73.44 a bay per year
  • Trailer - 48’ to 53’ semi trailer, $100 a month 
  • Other Not for Profit institutions/agencies: Heated & Non–Heated $15 a bay per month 
  • Student and For Profit institutions/agencies: Heated & Non-Heated - $25 a bay per month 
  • 24/7 Accessibility – Rates vary according to size of unit Approximately $100 a month
  • Non-MSU Customers - Contact for availability

Heat Wrapping
While conventional shrink wrapping of your storage is provided free of charge, also now offered is a heat wrapping system for extra protection A thick plastic film that is heated to cause it to shrink and provide a form fitting cover for the item.  This provide additional protection for items by securing and covering the item more completely then normal shrink wrap can. Most any size item can be wrapped from cars, to pallets, to furniture. Cost: $25 per pallet

Charges/Credits
If a department has a specific number of bays at the beginning of the fiscal year and acknowledges the annual charge, there will not be a credit to that department for removal of storage unless we are notified by the department in writing.  The credit will be pro-rated for the remainder of the fiscal year, but will not include the month it was removed. Space not utilized but paid for will remain open and available to that department during the course of that fiscal year.

  • Storage brought in during the middle of a month will be charged for the entire month.
  • Storage removed during the middle of the month and being billed annually will be charged for that entire month and credit will be given to cover the remainder of that fiscal year. 

Pick Up
Pick up and transportation of storage to the MSU Surplus Store is free.

Delivery
The first storage delivery to a department or other on-campus locations during normal business hours is provided free of charge.  Additional deliveries will be charged $35.00 an hour with a minimum of $35.00 per trip. 

  • Charges for off-campus pick-ups or deliveries will be based on mileage and service and will be negotiated prior to the service.
  • On-campus service includes delivery, equipment and furniture moves, etc. either during the regular workday or after hours.
  • Off-campus service includes pickup and delivery service in the tri-county area, and long distance trips within the Lower Peninsula.
  • More extensive trips may be scheduled but sufficient lead time is necessary. 
  • At least 24 hours notice is required for deliveries.

Managed Storage
When scheduling a pickup of your storage items, you will be asked for the following information:

  • Contact Name
  • Campus address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Fax number
  • Description of storage 
    MSU Surplus reserve the right to refuse hazardous material or equipment.
  • Length of storage (Short term vs. long term)
  • Account number (or payment information)
  • Type of storage required (heated, non-heated, 24/7 or trailer)
  • Once the department’s storage has been picked up it will be the department contact’s responsibility to maintain the inventory for those items.  In special circumstances the Storage Services staff can accommodate special coding and counting of material but may require a fee.
  • Appointments can be arranged for viewing or taking inventory of storage. 24 hours notice is required.
