Services

The MSU Surplus Store provides a variety of services to MSU departments:

Pick Up

Pick up of items designated for disposition is free. If you would like an item picked up please fill out the appropriate form and forward to the MSU Surplus Store. Once the form is received, items will be picked up on a first come, first served basis. We currently maintain 2 trucks with 3 employees who service the entire campus. Due to the fluctuating volume, pick ups can take as long as 3 weeks for large requests. The goal for smaller requests is 3 business days.

Guidelines for Potentially Hazardous Materials

Sale of Items for Credit

In fiscal year 2005/2006 the MSU Surplus Store returned over $1.3 million to MSU departments for the sale of consigned items. Departments requesting credit receive anywhere from 85-98% of the gross sale amount. Credits are generally limited to items that sell for over $100 or where special arrangements have been made with a representative of the MSU Surplus Store.

Sale of Non-Credit Items

The sale of non-credit items subsidizes several of the "free" services provided by the MSU Surplus Store. Most notably: free pick ups, disposition of non-sellable's and public donations of low value, bulk materials. The MSU Surplus Store is operated solely on the revenue produced by it's sales and receives no general fund allocations.

Departmental Sales

Where possible, MSU departments who are purchasing items on an account number have the opportunity to purchase items before the general public. Redeployment provides a tremendous cost saving to the University. Delivery services are available for a nominal fee.  Many items are also available on-line for purchase on account number at:

Public Sales

The MSU Surplus Store conducts public sale days twice a week and operates two online stores.

Freon Reclamation

If a refrigerated item does not sell, it is subject to a $50 freon reclamation and recycling fee.

The MSU Surplus Store/Storage Services provides a variety of options to meet all of our University departmental customer's needs.

Donations to Non-Profit Organizations

The Michigan State University may donate items that have been determined by a representative of the MSU Surplus Store to have no value to the University.

Offering Donations to MSU

This winter the MSU Surplus Store and University Development will be teaming up to kick off a new program where personal property donations to the University will be accepted.
